Falling in love

Learning music is like falling in love.
First, you are curious, maybe mildly apprehensive, but drawn to its challenge and you flirtatiously learn its intricacies.
You spend more and more time with it, and then it becomes familiar to you.
Then you become obsessive, the music and words secretly running through your mind… illogically, without your permission… but not unwelcomed.
You try to understand every note, analyzing measure by measure, finding the hidden joys and the relentless patterns or paternlessness.
Even when you know it completely, it surprises you with new interpretations and meanings.
Then the details fade and the piece as a whole settles in as you embrace it in its entirety- even the measures that once drove you crazy.
If you stop nurturing it, it fades, but is never completely forgotten. If you pick it up again, all the old feelings, interpretations, and habits will be right there.
